At Heywood Heating, we want to ensure that serious problems with the drainage systems in your home can be avoided. That is why we have devised some simple steps that you can follow to keep your drains happy and healthy!
1. Avoid Putting These Items Down Your Drain
Items such as cooking oil/grease, coffee grounds and hair can cause blocking. If you monitor the waste going down your drain you can avoid potential blockages. Collect cooking oil in a jar and then dispose of this in the bin. In bathrooms, ensure you do not flush sanitary products or other items such as nappies and face wipes down the toilet as these can cause blockages.
2. Use a Drain-Grate
Using a drain-grate is a great way to catch any solid items that should not be going down your drain as these can become lodged in pipes and cause a blockage. Drain-grates can be found at local plumbing or DIY shops and can be simply placed over your drain. If you are unsure, take a photo of your drain and check with a shop assistant if it requires a certain style of drain-grate.
3. Regularly Clean Your Drain
There are a few different ways to do this, including putting a few scoops of baking soda into the drain and washing it down with hot water or pouring a cup of vinegar down your drain and letting it sit for half an hour before washing it away with hot water. Both baking soda and vinegar are excellent cleaners and vinegar can act as an organic solvent to remove organs buildup in your pipes. You can also purchase a range of drain unblockers which can be used to eliminate small blockages. It is also good practice to run hot water down the sink after every use as it keeps food products moving and will clear any oils that are in food products.
Following these steps will ensure that your drains are kept in good condition and will significantly reduce the likelihood of you requiring emergency plumbing assistance. However, if you have any questions or need advice, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
